Believe it or not, I was once aspiring lobster fisherman from the village of Achiltibuie in North West Scotland. My hometown and rural upbringing drive my interest in remote communities and the importance of connectivity. As well as leading the business, I like to be actively involved in projects to help deliver improved connectivity through research of new models and methods across the globe.

I have worked with the Scottish Government looking at the impact digital connectivity can have on reducing the effects of climate change across various sectors. As I have a science background, I already had a huge interest in environmental and climate issues, so I found this project really fascinating in understanding how digital connectivity can help in the climate crisis.

Connectivity doesn’t achieve societal and economic benefits alone, however it is a key enabler of these and is able to help improve peoples lives whether at home, at work or travelling. The most recent and best example of this is the global COVID-19 pandemic and the positive impact that connectivity has had in helping governments, businesses and individuals deal with the situation.

As the need for seamless and affordable digital connectivity grows, government, industry and research alike work on ensuring digital infrastructure can match this demand. It is important however, that in addition to building digital connectivity infrastructure, we work with communities to help them harness it. If we want to create a digital world that works for all, we must ensure people have the skills, technologies and motivation to get the most out of connectivity infrastructure and the benefits that it can bring.

Internet access and particularly high-speed broadband connectivity has become an essential part of our lives, both at work and leisure. It’s important that we extend connectivity to people living in some of the remotest areas, who in many cases have an even more pressing need than those of us in towns and cities. I find it rewarding that I can use my background in wireless and microwave radio to help bring solutions to remote areas.
The team! Everyone here is fantastic, with such varied backgrounds and experiences. It is easy to fit in because everyone is friendly, approachable, and always willing to help. Coming into our lovely office, seeing everyone, having a chat, and of course, getting work done makes every day enjoyable.

Broadband internet access is so ubiquitous that we often forget what it would be like without it. But for many Canadians living in rural and remote areas, lack of internet access is a barrier to better access to services, better health, and overall better living conditions. Helping to alleviate this problem, even in incremental ways, is very rewarding.
