Background

WM5G, a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating 5G deployment across the West Midlands, sought to capitalise on the existing duct and fibre assets along the Metro route on behalf of the West Midlands Metro and West Midlands Combined Authority. The initiative focused on enhancing digital connectivity within the region by exploring new avenues to generate revenue and improve services by deploying advanced digital infrastructure, including 5G Small Cells.

The Challenge

The primary challenge for WM5G was to evaluate the viability of reusing existing infrastructure to support 5G deployment. Specifically, they needed a comprehensive analysis that would provide high-level cost modelling and potential revenue estimates. This analysis would inform their strategy for asset utilisation, either through direct deployment or via a joint venture with a suitable partner. Additionally, WM5G required an understanding of the overall value of their assets to inform decision-making.

What FarrPoint Delivered

FarrPoint delivered a detailed high-level cost model that estimated the potential revenue from the wholesale access of duct, dark fibre, lit fibre, and trackside infrastructure along the Metro route. The analysis also included an asset valuation to help WM5G determine the best approach for monetising these resources. The findings were presented in a clear, concise report, accompanied by a meeting to discuss the results and next steps, ensuring that WM5G had the insights needed to make informed strategic decisions.
