FarrPoint has been working with a local government body to undertake a carbon footprint assessment of their data centres to assist them in forming the business case for cloud transformation.
The client commissioned FarrPoint to undertake a strategy review of its Wide Area network in light of a number of initiatives, including the local authority’s stated ambition to transfer and transform its largely on-premise IT services to cloud based alternatives.
As part of this review, the local authority requested FarrPoint to undertake a carbon footprint assessment of their Data Centres to assist them in forming the business case for cloud transformation.
The FarrPoint approach included a review of current energy usage, data loads, and data centre equipment to analyse and calculate the existing carbon footprint of the on-premise facilities. This showed the existing services were operating at Power Utilisation Efficiency (PUE) of 2.18, relatively typical of a facility not custom designed for data centre usage.
The power usage equated to an annual carbon footprint of 27 Metric Tons of CO2e.
The FarrPoint deliverables were used as a benchmark on which to evaluate suitable external data hosting facilities and support the business case for a move to the cloud.
